Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, while granting bail to Etvir Limbu, a Nepali national caught for illegally entering an Air Force Station in Allahabad in February while intoxicated, expressed concern over the language used on armed forces premises.
In its order dated May 31, 2024, the High Court remarked, “The language used, such as ‘Trespassers will be shot’ and ‘dekhte hi goli maar di jayegi (you will be shot at sight),’ has a negative impact on children. Therefore, the central government may consider using lighter language.”
Limbu’s defense argued that he was falsely implicated in the case. They claimed that he unintentionally reached the Manauri Air Force Station and, being intoxicated and not fluent in Hindi, could not effectively communicate with the stationed soldier. Additionally, his identity card was lost.
Previously, the court had requested guidelines regarding the language used on such premises.
The Court further stated, “While it is true that trespassers are not allowed on armed forces premises for security reasons, the language used, particularly ‘dekhte hi goli maar di jayegi,’ is not appropriate, especially in public places where children and the general public frequent.”
The High Court emphasized the need for caution in using such language due to its potential negative impact on children.
