In a recent directive, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has urged the Uttar Pradesh Government to expedite the release of funds to NGOs operating juvenile homes in the state. The order comes in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Anoop Gupta in 2008, seeking improvements in juvenile shelter homes’ conditions and adequate funding for their operations.
A division bench comprising Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Jaspreet Singh passed the order, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that NGOs running juvenile homes do not face financial constraints in caring for the juveniles under their supervision.
During the hearing on May 9, the state counsel informed the court that funds sanctioned for the NGO Drishti Samajik Sansthan on May 8 would be deposited into their account within two days. Furthermore, the state counsel assured the court that the process of releasing funds to other NGOs operating juvenile homes would also be expedited.
The High Court’s order underscores the critical role of adequate funding in maintaining the welfare and well-being of juveniles residing in shelter homes. By ensuring timely financial support, the court aims to prevent any hindrances in providing essential care and support to vulnerable juveniles.
“We expect that the funds which the said NGOs are entitled to shall be released in their favour as per rules expeditiously so that they are not handicapped in looking after the juveniles in their homes,” the court ordered.
With this directive, the Allahabad High Court has taken a proactive stance in addressing the urgent needs of juvenile shelter homes. The court’s decision reflects its commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of vulnerable juveniles and ensuring their proper care and protection.
The matter is scheduled to be listed for the next hearing in the third week of July, signifying the court’s ongoing oversight and commitment to monitoring the situation and ensuring compliance with its directives.
