Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has filed a fresh plea before the Delhi High Court, seeking intervention to prevent the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from taking coercive action against him in connection with the excise policy case. This move follows the issuance of a ninth summons by the ED for Kejriwal’s appearance on March 21, after he had skipped all previous eight summonses.
In his petition, Kejriwal has requested the court to direct the ED to refrain from coercive action against him if he complies with the summons. He expressed his willingness to appear before the ED if given assurance by the agency that he will not be arrested, or if the court orders no coercive action against him.
The plea comes after the Delhi High Court heard Kejriwal’s earlier petition challenging the summonses issued by the ED. During the hearing, Senior advocate AM Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that there was a clear intent by the agency to arrest the Delhi CM, particularly considering the upcoming elections.
Singhvi emphasized Kejriwal’s readiness to cooperate with the ED, whether in person or virtually, but stressed the need for protection. He highlighted Kejriwal’s strong roots in society and his non-criminal status, questioning the necessity for coercive measures.
The AAP leader and his party have consistently denounced the summonses as illegal, alleging that they were issued with the intention of arresting Kejriwal. The court has granted the ED two weeks to respond to Kejriwal’s petition, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday.
As the legal battle unfolds, Kejriwal continues to assert his commitment to addressing the allegations while seeking protection from coercive measures, ensuring a fair and transparent legal process.
