Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna Offer Public Apology in Supreme Court Over Misleading Ads Contempt Case

Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balkrishna appeared before the Supreme Court today as it addressed the contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved concerning its misleading advertisements and claims regarding Covid cures.

During the previous hearing, the Apex Court had strongly criticized the founders of Patanjali and expressed dissatisfaction with the Uttarakhand government’s inaction against the company.

In today’s proceedings, the SC Bench, comprising Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Amanullah, acknowledged the significant contribution of the Patanjali founders to yoga. However, they also questioned the founders’ attitude and emphasized the equal application of the law to all.

Baba Ramdev expressed readiness to issue a public apology, clarifying that it was never his intention to undermine the prestige of the Supreme Court. He assured the court of being more cautious in the future.

The court, while appreciating the gesture, reminded the contemnors of their previous violations and indicated that forgiveness was not yet decided. The next hearing is scheduled for April 23, during which Ramdev and Balkrishna are expected to demonstrate their sincerity.

Outside the court, Baba Ramdev reiterated his faith in the judiciary, stating that he had conveyed his stance. However, the court had previously rejected two apologies from Ramdev and Balkrishna, noting that they were initially sent to the media, indicating a preference for publicity.

The contempt case stems from Patanjali’s promotion of Coronil, a drug launched in 2021, which was claimed to be the “first evidence-based medicine for COVID-19.” The Indian Medical Association (IMA) criticized these claims, particularly after a video surfaced in which Ramdev disparaged allopathy.

Subsequently, Patanjali published an advertisement alleging misconceptions spread by allopathy and claimed its products could cure various diseases. The IMA filed a petition against Patanjali for spreading misinformation and making false claims.

In response, the Supreme Court warned Patanjali against such claims and threatened heavy fines. The case underscores the importance of accountability and accuracy in advertising, especially concerning health-related products.
