BharatPe and PhonePe Reach Settlement in Longstanding Trademark Dispute Over “Pe” Suffix

In a significant development for the Indian fintech industry, BharatPe and PhonePe have announced the amicable settlement of their long-standing legal dispute regarding the use of the trademark suffix “Pe.” After years of legal battles across various courts in India, both companies have reached a mutually beneficial resolution.

Resolving Years of Legal Battles

A joint statement released on Sunday confirmed the news, stating, “BharatPe and PhonePe have amicably settled all long-standing trademark disputes pertaining to the use of the trademark with the suffix ‘Pe’.” The settlement marks the conclusion of a contentious chapter that spanned five years, clearing the path for a future free of legal roadblocks.

Clearing the Path Forward

The settlement agreement not only resolves existing disputes but also ensures a smooth path forward. Both companies have taken proactive steps to remove objections from the trademark registry, facilitating the individual registration of their respective trademarks. This demonstrates a commitment to moving beyond past conflicts and focusing on future growth.

Fulfilling Settlement Obligations

As part of the settlement, both parties have committed to fulfilling their obligations under the agreement. “The parties will undertake to take any additional actions required to comply with their obligations under the settlement agreement with respect to all cases before the Delhi and Bombay High Courts,” the statement affirmed.

Rajnish Kumar, Chairman of the Board at BharatPe, welcomed the resolution, highlighting its significance for the industry. “This is a positive development for the industry,” he remarked. Kumar also commended the professionalism displayed by both companies’ management in resolving legal issues and redirecting their focus towards building robust digital payment ecosystems.

The settlement between BharatPe and PhonePe marks a significant milestone in the Indian fintech landscape, setting a precedent for constructive resolution of disputes and fostering a conducive environment for industry growth.
