Bombay High Court Protects Family’s Right to Hold Prayer Meetings

The Bombay High Court has intervened to protect a Christian family in Navi Mumbai from threats and harassment related to their religious practices.

Key Points:

  • Sharland Davidson, a resident of Koproli, Panvel, faced pressure from his housing complex chairman and right-wing groups to stop holding prayer meetings at his home.
  • He and his family, along with relatives, had been conducting these meetings for six years, with 20-25 attendees.
  • Davidson reported threats, vandalism, and even assault to the Panvel Taluka police station but alleges inaction on their part.

Court’s Action:

  • The Bombay High Court, comprising Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Manjusha Deshpande, directed the Navi Mumbai Police to ensure the family’s safety and their right to hold prayer meetings.
  • The court will hear further arguments regarding the registration of an FIR (First Information Report) on April 12th.

Importance of Religious Freedom:

  • This case highlights the importance of protecting religious freedom in India.
  • The court’s order upholds the family’s right to practice their faith within their private space.

Unresolved Issue:

  • While the court has addressed the immediate security concerns, the question of registering an FIR against those who threatened and assaulted Davidson remains open.
  • The April 12th hearing will determine further legal action.
