Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Probe into Alleged Crimes Against Women and Land Grabbing in Sandeshkhali

In response to mounting allegations of crimes against women and forcible land grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, the High Court of Calcutta has taken a decisive step by ordering a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.

A division bench, headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, issued the directive for a CBI investigation, emphasizing that the court will closely monitor the proceedings. The CBI has been tasked with conducting a thorough examination of revenue records and physical inspections of land allegedly converted from agricultural to water bodies for pisciculture purposes.

The court’s decision comes in the wake of protests and unrest in Sandeshkhali over the reported incidents. With the investigation under its purview, the High Court seeks to ensure a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged illegal activities, including crimes against women and forced land acquisitions.

The bench, comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya alongside Chief Justice Sivagnanam, has set a deadline for the CBI to submit a detailed report on its findings by May 2. This report will shed light on the extent of the alleged offenses and provide crucial insights into the situation in Sandeshkhali.

The backdrop to this directive includes an incident on January 5, during which Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were attacked by a mob in Sandeshkhali. The ED officials were in the area to conduct searches related to a ration distribution scam case involving now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh.

With the High Court’s intervention and the initiation of a CBI probe, there is hope for justice and accountability in Sandeshkhali. The move underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing serious allegations of wrongdoing and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights.

The upcoming CBI investigation and subsequent report will be pivotal in uncovering the truth behind the alleged crimes and restoring order in Sandeshkhali.
