The High Court of Calcutta has taken a significant step by ordering a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of crimes against women and forcible land grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali region. This decision comes amidst protests over these issues in the area.
Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, leading a division bench, announced that the court would closely monitor the investigation. The bench directed the CBI to conduct a thorough inspection of revenue records and physically examine the land suspected to have been illegally converted from agricultural land to water bodies for pisciculture.
The court instructed the CBI to investigate the allegations and submit a comprehensive report on the next date of hearing. The bench, which also included Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, scheduled the next hearing for May 2, coinciding with the deadline for the CBI’s report submission.
This move by the Calcutta High Court follows an incident on January 5, where Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were attacked by a mob while attempting to search the premises of Shajahan Sheikh, a now-suspended leader of the Trinamool Congress. The search was related to a case involving a ration distribution scam.
The decision to involve the CBI underscores the gravity of the allegations and the need for a thorough and impartial investigation. By closely monitoring the probe, the court aims to ensure accountability and justice in addressing the alleged crimes in Sandeshkhali.
Key Points:
This development signals a commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of individuals affected by criminal activities. The court’s proactive approach reflects its determination to address serious allegations and restore peace and justice in Sandeshkhali.
