The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Court No.-2, Lucknow, has sentenced Rahul Verma to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹75,000 in connection with the murder of Adesh Bajpai, a Mumbai-based fashion designer. The verdict was delivered today, concluding a complex case that spanned over a decade.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered two cases on November 18, 2010, following the directives of the Allahabad High Court dated October 8, 2010. These cases, FIR No. 842/2008 and FIR No. 137/2008, originally registered at Kalyanpur and Moolganj police stations in Kanpur Nagar, were taken over to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.
Case Background:
The first FIR, No. 842/2008, was filed under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after the recovery of bones in a gunny bag from the IIT Kanpur campus. This discovery was made on September 3, 2008, and a complaint was lodged by the security officer of IIT Kanpur.
The second FIR, No. 137/2008, was registered under Section 364 (kidnapping or abduction with the intent to murder) of the IPC. This complaint, lodged on August 20, 2008, by Surya Kumar Bajpai, reported the disappearance of his son, Adesh Bajpai, from Moolganj Chauraha, Kanpur Nagar.
Investigation Details:
Adesh Bajpai, a fashion designer from Mumbai, traveled to Lucknow on August 4, 2008, and subsequently to Kanpur on August 10, 2008. He was last seen with Rahul Verma on the night of August 10, 2008, at Moolganj Chauraha.
The CBI’s investigation involved advanced forensic techniques, including a Skull Super Imposition Test conducted by CFSL Chandigarh, Mitochondrial DNA Analysis by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) Hyderabad, and a Forensic Psychological Assessment of Rahul Verma by CFSL New Delhi. The DNA analysis confirmed that the bones found at IIT Kanpur belonged to Adesh Bajpai.
Judicial Proceedings:
Based on the evidence gathered, the CBI arrested Rahul Verma on January 24, 2012. A common charge sheet for both FIRs was filed against him on April 20, 2012, in the Court of the Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI Cases, Lucknow. The comprehensive investigation and expert testimonies established Verma’s involvement in the murder.
The court’s verdict today brings closure to a prolonged legal battle, reinforcing the importance of meticulous forensic investigation in securing justice.
