In a significant development, the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Lucknow, handed down a verdict today, sentencing Sh. Rajesh Gupta, a private individual, and Ajay Tiwari, the then Assistant Accountant at the Office of the DAO, NER, Lucknow, to a maximum of 7 years in prison along with a fine of Rs. 65,000/- each.
The case, which dates back to 28th May 1998, was initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based on allegations that Sh. Rajesh Gupta, in collusion with other accused individuals, including public servants and private persons, orchestrated a scheme involving fake purchase orders and bills. This scheme resulted in a loss of Rs. 2,55,285/- to the Indian Railways while benefiting the perpetrators financially.
Following an exhaustive investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on 11th October 1999. Subsequently, charges were framed on 1st May 2002 and 7th March 2015.
It’s noteworthy that proceedings against one of the accused were separated as charges against them were framed later, necessitating a fresh examination of numerous witnesses.
After a rigorous trial process, the Court delivered its verdict today, finding both Rajesh Gupta and Ajay Tiwari guilty of the charges leveled against them.
