The CBI Court in Hyderabad is scheduled to commence hearings on the discharge petitions of 127 accused, including Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, in cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged quid pro quo and disproportionate assets starting June 19.
On Wednesday, the cases were listed before the court, where counsels for Jagan and other accused sought a brief adjournment on technical grounds. Judge T. Raghuram emphasized that the hearings would proceed regularly to ensure timely justice.
This development follows orders from the Telangana High Court, which previously directed the CBI Court to resolve these cases within two months. The resolution had been delayed due to the transfer of the previous judge handling the case, preventing a judgment on the discharge petitions despite ongoing hearings.
In a related move, the Telangana High Court, on Tuesday, instructed the special court to expedite the trial of MPs and MLAs to address petitions pending for over five years. The High Court further ordered the registry to forward the Supreme Court’s directive, emphasizing no further delays in proceedings against current and former public representatives.
Given these circumstances, the CBI Court is set to proceed expeditiously with the discharge petitions. These cases have lingered for over a decade, necessitating prompt resolution.
Reportedly, the CBI plans to petition against the High Court’s earlier decision that exempted Jagan Mohan Reddy from mandatory personal appearance in court. The High Court had, in 2022, allowed his authorized counsel to represent him, considering his duties as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, which require constant attention and could be hampered by frequent court appearances. The court also factored in the significant security protocol for Jagan Mohan Reddy, which could disrupt court proceedings.
However, following recent election results that have significantly altered his political standing, the CBI may seek to revoke this exemption, requiring Jagan Mohan Reddy to appear in person before the court.
