The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has informed the Jharkhand High Court that no significant information has been uncovered from the WhatsApp chats of two individuals convicted in the murder of Judge Uttam Anand in Dhanbad.
Judge Anand tragically lost his life while out for a morning walk on July 28, 2021, a shocking incident that shook the nation.
The CBI provided details of the WhatsApp exchanges of the two convicts to the court. A division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Ananda Sen was overseeing a public interest litigation initiated suo moto after the murder.
The high court had taken up the matter and commenced monitoring the investigation, initially undertaken by the Dhanbad police. However, with the investigation’s progress remaining sluggish, the case was transferred to the CBI.
During the course of its investigation, the CBI focused on two individuals, namely Lakhan Verma and Rahul Verma, who were identified as the driver and conductor of the autorickshaw involved in the incident. Subsequently, they were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.
Judge Anand, an additional district judge, was struck by the auto-rickshaw near Randhir Verma Chowk early in the morning. The incident was captured on CCTV, and the footage circulated nationwide, prompting widespread shock and condemnation.
As the investigation continues, the lack of significant findings from the convicts’ WhatsApp chats adds another layer of complexity to the case. The judicial process remains under the close scrutiny of the high court, which continues to monitor developments closely.
