Centre Notifies Transfer of Two Judges to Telangana High Court”

In a recent development, the Central government has formally announced the transfer of two judges, Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, to the Telangana High Court from their respective positions in other high courts.

The notification, issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday, marks the culmination of a process initiated after the approval of the transfers by the President of India.

The decision to transfer Justice Sujoy Paul from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya from the Calcutta High Court to the Telangana High Court was first proposed by a five-member Supreme Court collegium. This collegium, led by Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, endorsed the transfers in the second week of February, forwarding its recommendations to the Union government for final approval. Subsequently, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the President of India sanctioned the proposals.

Justice Sujoy Paul, who has served in the Madhya Pradesh High Court since May 27, 2011, expressed his preference for a transfer to any high court other than Madhya Pradesh due to personal reasons. His request was considered by the Supreme Court collegium.

Similarly, Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, who has been a judge at the Calcutta High Court since September 21, 2017, and was appointed as a permanent judge in 2019, sought a transfer from the Calcutta High Court citing personal reasons.

The transfer of these judges to the Telangana High Court reflects the dynamic nature of judicial appointments and the considerations taken into account regarding personal and professional circumstances. The Telangana High Court is set to benefit from the wealth of experience and expertise brought by these esteemed jurists, further enhancing the judiciary’s capacity to deliver justice effectively in the region.

As per the notification, both Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya will assume their new roles at the Telangana High Court following the completion of necessary formalities and arrangements.
