Chennai Court Sentences Stalker to Death for Pushing College Student in Front of Train

In a landmark judgment, a Chennai court on Monday sentenced Sathish, a 30-year-old man, to death for the brutal murder of a 20-year-old college student, Sathya. The heinous crime, committed in 2022, involved Sathish pushing Sathya in front of a moving suburban train at the St Thomas Railway Station, killing her on the spot.

The case, initially investigated by the local police, was later transferred to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for a thorough probe. The CB-CID investigation revealed that Sathish had been stalking Sathya before committing the act of violence.

Mahila Court Delivers Justice

The Mahila Court in Chennai, presiding over the case, found Sathish guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prescribes punishment for murder. Pronouncing the verdict, the court stated, “The accused is sentenced to death, and that he be hanged by the neck, till he is dead.”

In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of ₹35,000 on Sathish and ordered him to pay ₹10 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family.

A Case That Shook the Nation

The incident, which took place in broad daylight, sent shockwaves across the nation, highlighting the growing menace of stalking and violence against women. Sathya, a promising college student, lost her life in a crime that underscored the urgent need for stricter laws and effective measures to curb such acts.

Significance of the Verdict

The court’s decision is seen as a strong message against gender-based violence. Activists and legal experts have welcomed the judgment, calling it a step towards ensuring justice for women and deterring similar crimes in the future.

The Road Ahead

While the verdict offers some solace to Sathya’s grieving family, it also raises questions about the systemic issues that allow such crimes to occur. Advocacy for better enforcement of anti-stalking laws, improved safety measures in public spaces, and community awareness campaigns are crucial to preventing such tragedies.

As India continues to grapple with crimes against women, this case serves as both a grim reminder and a call to action. Ensuring the safety and dignity of women remains an urgent and collective responsibility.
