CJI Chandrachud Highlights Independence in Judicial Decisions, Cooperation with Government on Administrative Front

Keywords: CJI D Y Chandrachud, Supreme Court, High Court, judiciary, government, Bombay High Court, infrastructure, collaboration, judicial independence

On Monday, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud emphasized the distinction between the independence of the judiciary in decision-making and the collaboration between the judiciary and the government on administrative matters. He made these remarks during the foundation stone ceremony for the Bombay High Court’s new complex in Bandra, Mumbai, a project carried out in collaboration with the Maharashtra government.

CJI Chandrachud highlighted that while Supreme Court and High Court judges operate with the “fiercest sense of independence” in their judicial functions, they work closely with the government in matters concerning administration and infrastructure. He praised the joint efforts of the state and the judiciary to bring modern judicial facilities to Mumbai, reflecting a commitment to improving public infrastructure.

The new High Court complex, situated on land provided by the Maharashtra government in the upscale Bandra area, will incorporate elements from the British-era building of the existing court in south Mumbai, blending the region’s rich legal heritage with contemporary architectural design.

CJI Chandrachud noted that the initiative underscores the importance of providing citizens with accessible and modern legal services. The integration of stones from the historic Bombay High Court building into the new foundation serves as a symbolic bridge between the judiciary’s past and its future aspirations.
