New Delhi, India — Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud extended heartfelt congratulations to Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on his election as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) during a ceremonial bench session on Friday.
“Mr. Sibal, heartiest congratulations on our behalf for being elected as the president of the SCBA. We look forward towards your cooperation & (that of) the members of the executive committee,” stated the CJI, highlighting the anticipation of a collaborative relationship between the judiciary and the bar association under Sibal’s leadership.
In response, Sibal expressed his gratitude, noting the significance of his election after a long gap. “It is my honour that after 22 years, I have been given this opportunity to serve the bar. From our side, you will have complete cooperation & that’s our commitment to the bench. It is through this cooperation that we can take the agenda forward,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of mutual support in advancing the legal community’s objectives.
Kapil Sibal’s election as SCBA president was confirmed on Thursday. He secured over 1,000 votes, outpacing his nearest competitor, Pradeep Kumar Rai, who received over 650 votes. Sibal, a Harvard Law School graduate, has an extensive legal and political career, having served as additional solicitor general of India from 1989 to 1990 and being designated as a senior advocate in 1983. Notably, he has previously held the position of SCBA president three times between 1995 and 2002.
Other contenders for the SCBA presidency included senior advocates Adish C Aggarwala, Priya Hingorani, and advocates Tripurari Ray and Neeraj Srivastava.
Sibal’s election marks a significant moment for the SCBA, with expectations high for his leadership to foster greater cooperation between the bar and the bench, contributing to the advancement of the legal profession and judicial processes in India.
