Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has expressed concern over the recent trend of lawyers commenting on pending cases or judgments, describing it as a disturbing development. Speaking at the centenary year celebration of the High Court Bar Association of Nagpur, he emphasized that office-bearers and members of the bar should remember their roles as officers of the court and refrain from behaving like laypersons.
Justice Chandrachud underscored the importance of maintaining the independence and non-partisanship of the judiciary, stating that there is a close connection between the independence of the judiciary and that of the bar. He highlighted the essential role of the bar in preserving judicial independence, constitutional values, and the dignity of the court.
While acknowledging the political inclinations of individuals in a vibrant democracy like India, the CJI emphasized that lawyers must prioritize the interests of the court and the Constitution over partisan interests. Quoting Aristotle, he reminded that lawyers, like all individuals, are political animals, but their allegiance should ultimately lie with the principles of justice and the rule of law.
