The eagerly awaited release of Imtiaz Ali’s film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, starring Diljit Dosanjh, is set to proceed as scheduled after a recent court ruling dismissed a motion seeking to delay its release.
The court of additional district judge in Ludhiana declined to grant an injunction to postpone the release of the film, which is slated to premiere on Netflix on Friday, April 12. The movie revolves around the life of the renowned Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his partner, Amarjot Kaur.
In response to a plea filed by Ishdeep Singh Randhawa of Patiala on April 8, the court opted not to issue any injunction orders and instead adjourned the application. The filmmakers have been given time to submit their written response, with the next hearing scheduled for May 6.
Randhawa’s plea asserted that Chamkila’s first wife, Gurmail Kaur, had sold exclusive rights to the biopic to his late father, Gurdev Singh, who was a director and producer in the Punjabi film industry. Randhawa claimed that his father had acquired the rights through a formal agreement in 2012.
However, this is not the first legal challenge the film has faced. Last year, a similar lawsuit filed in a Ludhiana court by Randhawa was withdrawn after the court deemed the claims to be out of time and not constituting copyright infringement, leading to the refusal of an injunction.
The legal representatives of the movie’s producers, Reliance Entertainment and Window Seat Films, confirmed that the case has been adjourned until May 6.
Amar Singh Chamkila, a prominent figure in the Punjabi music scene, met a tragic end on March 8, 1988, along with his second wife, Amarjot Kaur, when they were shot dead by militants in Mehsampur village, Jalandhar. Despite his fame, Chamkila’s career was marked by both admiration and controversy, with his legacy continuing to spark interest and debate among fans and critics alike.
