Court Extends ED Remand of Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam for Three More Days

On Monday, a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Ranchi extended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) remand of Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam by an additional three days. The extension comes as part of the ongoing investigation into an alleged money laundering case, as confirmed by his legal representatives.

Minister Alamgir Alam, who holds the position of state parliamentary affairs minister and represents the Pakur constituency in the Jharkhand Assembly, was initially taken into custody by the ED on May 15. This followed two days of intense interrogation at the ED office. The PMLA Court first remanded him to ED custody for six days on May 17, with a subsequent five-day extension granted on May 22.

Alam’s legal counsel, Kishlay Prasad, noted that the ED sought a further three-day extension to facilitate additional inquiries into the case. Prasad explained, “The ED indicated the necessity for additional inquiries & the requirement for details regarding immovable properties.”

The ED’s investigation into Alam has intensified following significant developments, including the arrests of his personal secretary, Sanjeev Kumar Lal (52), and Lal’s domestic help, Jahangir Alam (42). During a raid on May 6 at a flat associated with the two individuals, the ED uncovered over Rs 32 crore in cash. This discovery has raised substantial concerns about alleged irregularities and bribery within the state rural development department, in which Alam plays a prominent role.

The extension of Alam’s remand underscores the complexity and seriousness of the allegations against him. The ED continues to delve deeper into the financial activities and properties linked to the minister, aiming to uncover the full extent of the purported money laundering scheme.

As the investigation progresses, all eyes remain on the ED’s findings and the legal ramifications for Minister Alam and his associates. The extended remand period is expected to provide the agency with the necessary time to gather more evidence and clarify the intricacies of the case.
