Cyclone Fengal Nearing Formation: IMD Warns of Potential Landfall Near Tamil Nadu Coast

Keywords: Cyclone Fengal, Bay of Bengal, IMD weather update, Tamil Nadu cyclone, deep depression, landfall forecast, North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the cyclogenesis of Cyclone Fengal in the Bay of Bengal is nearing completion, with the storm expected to fully form by tomorrow, November 27, 2024. This developing cyclone, currently categorized as a ‘deep depression,’ is anticipated to intensify further under favorable atmospheric and oceanic conditions before its predicted landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast later this week.

Current Status and Trajectory

As of today, the IMD weather bulletin places the deep depression approximately:

  • 310 km southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka,
  • 590 km south-southeast of Nagappattinam, Tamil Nadu,
  • 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry,
  • 800 km south-southeast of Chennai.

According to the IMD, the weather system has been bolstered by several environmental factors, including:

  • Warm sea surface temperatures and high ocean thermal energy,
  • Moderate wind shear,
  • Influence of favorable Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Equatorial Rossby Waves.

These conditions are conducive to further intensification of the cyclone until November 28.

Forecast: Landfall and Impacts

The exact location and timing of Cyclone Fengal’s landfall remain uncertain due to model divergences. However, all models agree on:

  • A gradual weakening of the system as it approaches the coast.
  • A slow movement near the Tamil Nadu coast, with Sri Lanka also likely to experience turbulent weather.

The IMD has cautioned that coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and northern Sri Lanka should brace for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding as the storm edges closer.

Cyclone Fengal in Context

If formed, Cyclone Fengal would be the second cyclone in the Bay of Bengal within two months, following Cyclone Dana, which made landfall in Odisha on October 25, 2024. Cyclone Dana, the third cyclonic storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, caused widespread damage with its severe winds and torrential rains, particularly in Odisha’s coastal districts.

Preparedness and Caution

Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka are likely to issue advisories as the system develops further. Residents in coastal regions are advised to stay updated with IMD bulletins, prepare for possible evacuations, and avoid venturing near coastal areas until conditions normalize.

Cyclone Fengal serves as a stark reminder of the recurring impact of tropical cyclones during the North Indian Ocean cyclone season, necessitating proactive disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies.
