Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken a firm stance against the Enforcement Directorate (ED), alleging their “most highhanded manner” in handling the money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. In a rejoinder to the ED’s reply affidavit filed in the Supreme Court challenging his arrest, Kejriwal emphasized his cooperation with the investigation throughout.
According to Kejriwal, the ED’s reply affidavit stated that his arrest was necessitated due to his failure to appear before the investigating officer despite being summoned nine times. The CM argued that such reasoning exhibited a disregard for due process and amounted to an affront to the law.
Furthermore, Kejriwal contested the ED’s claims of non-cooperation, asserting that each summons issued to him was duly responded to, with relevant details provided. He questioned the necessity of physically summoning him, highlighting the absence of an explanation from the ED regarding alternative modes of communication.
In response to the ED’s characterization of him as the “kingpin and key conspirator” in the excise policy scam, Kejriwal maintained his innocence, labeling the allegations as devoid of merit. He emphasized his right to be released from judicial custody and urged the court to consider his plea.
The ED, however, stood by its assertions, alleging Kejriwal’s involvement in the scam and claiming that his arrest was based on substantial evidence. Despite legal challenges, Kejriwal remains in Tihar jail under judicial custody, with the matter awaiting further deliberation in the Supreme Court.
The case, revolving around corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of Delhi’s excise policy, continues to garner attention as both parties present their arguments before the judiciary.
