On Tuesday, the Delhi Sessions Court granted interim bail to Lok Sabha MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, in connection with a terror funding case. Rashid, who has been in Tihar Jail since 2019, was granted interim relief until October 2 by Additional Sessions Judge Chanderjit Singh.
Rashid, representing Baramulla in the Lok Sabha after defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 general elections, sought interim bail to participate in the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir assembly election campaign. He had been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged involvement in a terror funding case that emerged during the 2017 investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali. Watali was accused of financing terror groups and separatist movements in Kashmir.
Rashid’s bail is expected to allow him to actively campaign in Jammu & Kashmir’s assembly elections, a crucial contest in the region’s political landscape.
