Delhi High Court Orders Inspection of Coaching Centers in Mukherjee Nagar After Fire Safety Concerns
The Delhi High Court has directed a multi-pronged approach to ensure the safety of students in Mukherjee Nagar’s coaching centers. This follows concerns raised after a fire incident in June 2023.
Key points:
A team of lawyers and fire officials will inspect coaching centers for compliance with safety regulations.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will submit a report on the total number of coaching centers operating in the area.
An independent team led by lawyer Gautam Narayan will assess compliance with regulations.
Delhi Fire Services will conduct their own inspection to identify non-compliant centers.
Background:
The court’s order comes after a series of cases regarding the operation of coaching centers in Mukherjee Nagar.
A fire incident in June 2023 prompted the court to take suo motu (on its own motion) cognizance of the issue.
Coaching Centers Dispute Inclusion in “Educational Building” Definition:
The Coaching Federation of India challenged the inclusion of coaching centers in the definition of “educational buildings.”
This classification necessitates specific fire safety measures, which existing centers might struggle to implement.
The federation argues for student safety but believes the categorization is arbitrary.
Next Steps:
The court will hear the case again in three weeks.
It will also consider a petition by the Coaching Federation of India regarding their classification.
The Delhi High Court’s intervention highlights the importance of prioritizing student safety in coaching centers. The upcoming inspections and legal arguments will determine the future regulations for these institutions.
