In a significant legal development, the Delhi High Court has reinstated the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), effectively halting the appointment of an Ad-hoc Administrative Committee (AAC) that was previously ordered to manage the federation’s affairs. This ruling came from a divisional bench of the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, providing a decisive outcome in favor of the EFI.
The legal tussle began when the Rajasthan Equestrian Association (REA) filed a plea, leading to a court order on May 24 for the establishment of an ad-hoc panel under Justice Nazmi Wajiri. This panel was intended to oversee the EFI’s operations. The order stemmed from concerns over the management and governance of the federation.
The EFI, asserting its autonomy as a sports federation, challenged the court’s decision, arguing that the appointment of an ad-hoc committee was unnecessary and detrimental to its operations, especially in a crucial Olympic year. The Delhi High Court, upon reviewing the challenge, stayed the previous order and reinstated the EFI’s control over its affairs.
Significantly, the court also restored the 20-member Executive Committee that was elected in 2019, reinforcing the federation’s established governance structure. This decision ensures that the EFI retains its self-governance and can continue its preparations for upcoming international competitions without external administrative disruptions.
Col. Jaiveer Singh, the Secretary General of the EFI, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision. He emphasized the importance of maintaining organizational stability, particularly in an Olympic year. “We had faith in the judiciary. We thank the court for hearing our concerns and delivering justice in this case. This is a crucial Olympic year and we want to stay focused on providing the best possible support to our athletes. This decision will help us in our endeavors,” he stated.
The reinstatement of the EFI and the stay on the appointment of the AAC have several significant implications:
The Delhi High Court’s decision to reinstate the Equestrian Federation of India and stay the appointment of an ad-hoc committee marks a victory for the federation’s autonomy and governance. It allows the EFI to focus on its primary mission of supporting and developing athletes, particularly with the Olympics on the horizon. This ruling underscores the judiciary’s role in protecting the autonomy of sports organizations, ensuring they operate without unwarranted external control.
