The Delhi High Court has taken decisive action against the rampant use of oxytocin in dairy colonies across the city, citing animal cruelty and violations of existing laws. In a landmark decision, a bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Court has directed the authorities to conduct weekly inspections and register cases against offenders, with the police tasked with investigating these cases.
The court’s intervention follows a petition filed by Sunayana Sibal and others, highlighting the concerning state of dairies in Delhi. One of the key issues raised in the petition was the widespread misuse of oxytocin to artificially stimulate milk production in cattle, a practice deemed inhumane and illegal under animal cruelty laws.
In its order issued on May 1, the High Court emphasized the need for strict enforcement of laws governing the use of oxytocin and directed the Delhi Government’s department of Drugs Control to take proactive measures. Additionally, the Intelligence Department of Delhi Police has been instructed to identify sources of spurious oxytocin production and take appropriate legal action.
Furthermore, the court emphasized the importance of relocating dairies to areas with proper infrastructure and facilities for the well-being of cattle. Highlighting the poor conditions of designated dairy colonies in Delhi, the court expressed particular concern about dairies located near landfill sites, noting the potential health hazards posed to both animals and the public.
To address these issues, the court has called upon relevant officials, including the MCD Commissioner, MCD Director of Veterinary, Delhi Chief Secretary, DUSIB CEO, and FSSAI CEO, to participate in proceedings and devise a plan for the relocation of affected dairies. The chief secretary has been tasked with coordinating efforts and exploring suitable land for the rehabilitation and relocation of dairies.
The High Court’s decisive action underscores the importance of upholding animal welfare laws and ensuring the well-being of both animals and residents. By cracking down on the illegal use of oxytocin and advocating for improved conditions in dairy colonies, the court aims to protect the rights of animals and safeguard public health.
