Former Judges and Journalist Extend Open Invitation to PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi for Public Debate

Former Supreme Court Judge Madan B Lokur, ex-Chief Justice of Delhi High Court AP Shah, and senior journalist N Ram have taken a bold step by inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to engage in a public debate on the ongoing Lok Sabha elections of 2024. The move comes amidst a clamor for substantive dialogue and meaningful exchanges between political leaders, rather than mere allegations and challenges.

In a joint invitation letter addressed to both leaders, Lokur, Shah, and Ram highlighted the pivotal questions raised by the BJP and Congress during rallies and public addresses. They emphasized the significance of directly hearing responses from political leaders on crucial matters concerning India’s constitutional democracy. The invitation underscored the potential benefits of a public debate conducted on a non-partisan and non-commercial platform, offering citizens an opportunity to witness firsthand the viewpoints and responses of the country’s key political figures.

With India being the world’s largest democracy, the initiative to organize a public debate assumes heightened importance, projecting a robust democratic process to the global community. The proposal, adaptable to the preferences of both leaders, extends flexibility regarding venue, duration, moderators, and format. Additionally, provisions are made for representatives in case Modi and Gandhi are unavailable to participate directly.

Madan B Lokur, renowned for his tenure in the Supreme Court, joins forces with AP Shah, a distinguished figure in the judiciary, and N Ram, a veteran journalist with a keen understanding of India’s political landscape, to advocate for transparency and accountability in electoral discourse. Their initiative signifies a call for elevating political dialogue beyond partisan rhetoric, fostering informed citizenry, and upholding the principles of a healthy and vibrant democracy.

As the invitation awaits a response from the Prime Minister and the Congress leader, the prospect of a public debate looms as a watershed moment in India’s electoral history, promising to set a precedent for constructive engagement and democratic deliberation.
