As the monsoon season approaches, the High Court of Kerala has issued a directive to ensure the thorough clearance of drains in flood-prone areas of Kochi City. Concerned about the recurring issue of inundation during heavy rains, Justice Devan Ramanchandran emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate flooding risks.
Expressing dismay at the need for judicial intervention year after year, the Court highlighted the recent inundation of several parts of Kochi City due to pre-monsoon rains. Identifying 15 hotspots prone to flooding, the Court underscored the importance of addressing drainage deficiencies to prevent further waterlogging.
Acknowledging existing challenges in drainage mapping and water flow management, the Court urged the high-powered committee to prioritize drain clearance and debris removal in identified hotspots. Stressing the imperative nature of this task, the Court emphasized the role of the municipal corporation in ensuring smooth water flow and preventing severe flooding.
The directive mandates timely action before the next hearing scheduled for May 27, underscoring the urgency of proactive measures to safeguard Kochi City against monsoon-related inundation. By prioritizing drain clearance and addressing drainage deficiencies, authorities can mitigate flooding risks and enhance the city’s resilience to heavy rainfall.
The Court’s intervention underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between judicial, municipal, and government authorities to implement effective flood prevention measures. With timely action and comprehensive drainage maintenance, Kochi City can better withstand the challenges posed by the upcoming monsoon season.
