A Sessions Court in Indore issued an arrest warrant against local businessman Akshay Bam and his father in connection with a 17-year-old attempt to murder case. The development comes amidst Bam’s recent withdrawal from the poll race for the Indore Lok Sabha seat as a Congress candidate, followed by his subsequent entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to public prosecutor Abhijit Singh Rathore, Bam and his father were summoned to appear before the sessions court in the alleged attempt to murder case. However, their lawyer filed an application seeking exemption from personal appearance, citing Bam’s absence from town due to “essential work” and his father’s poor health.
The court rejected the application and issued an arrest warrant against the duo, ordering the police to arrest them and present them before the court by July 8. The court noted their failure to comply with previous orders and their non-bail status in the case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The case dates back to an incident 17 years ago, where Bam and his father, along with others, were accused of assaulting a man named Yunus Patel over a land dispute. The FIR filed against them includes charges under sections 294 (abusive speech), 323 (assault), 506 (criminal intimidation), and other relevant provisions of the IPC.
Allegations suggest that during the altercation, Satvir Singh, allegedly acting on behalf of Kantilal Bam, fired at Patel with a 12-bore gun. While one of the accused, Satvir Singh, passed away later, two others remain absconding.
Bam’s withdrawal from the Congress candidature for the Indore Lok Sabha seat came just days after the court ordered him and his father to appear before it in the ongoing legal proceedings. The case underscores the complex intersection of politics and law, with Bam’s legal troubles coinciding with his political aspirations and affiliations.
