The Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (Jhalsa) has taken proactive steps to address the needs of vulnerable populations, launching two crucial initiatives during the 1st State Level Meet of Legal Aid Defence Counsels at Nyaya Sadan. High court judges, including Jhalsa executive chairman Justice S N Prasad, convened at the event to underscore the importance of legal assistance in safeguarding the rights of pregnant women in jails and enhancing support for senior citizens.
The first program focuses on providing legal aid to pregnant inmates, ensuring their well-being and access to essential healthcare services. As part of the action plan, Jhalsa aims to gather comprehensive data on the number of pregnant women in jails and assess their healthcare, nutrition, and legal representation needs. Furthermore, the initiative includes the implementation of a special diet regimen in alignment with the National Prison Manual. Notably, mothers in the post-natal stage will be offered separate accommodation to maintain hygiene and care for their infants. Additionally, health practitioners will provide guidance on health and diet to promote overall well-being.
In parallel, Jhalsa has launched a six-week campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the rights and entitlements of senior citizens. The campaign aims to empower elderly individuals by ensuring their access to government schemes, particularly for those residing in old age homes. By disseminating information and facilitating outreach efforts, Jhalsa seeks to enhance the quality of life and social inclusion of senior citizens across Jharkhand.
These initiatives underscore Jhalsa’s commitment to upholding justice and promoting inclusivity within the legal system. By addressing the specific needs of pregnant inmates and senior citizens, Jhalsa endeavors to foster a more equitable and compassionate society.
