Justice B.V. Nagarathna has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) of the Supreme Court of India, following the recent retirement of Justice Hima Kohli, the previous chairperson. The official order confirming the reconstitution of the committee was issued on Wednesday.
Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Senior Advocate Bansuri Swaraj, and Advocate Sakshi Banga have joined the newly reconstituted GSICC. Notably, Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy and Advocate Nina Gupta will continue their roles as representatives of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
Menaka Guruswamy, previously serving as an external member due to her work in gender and social justice, has been replaced in this role by Bansuri Swaraj, who was appointed by the Chief Justice of India.
The committee retains several key members, including Dr. Sukhda Pritam, Additional Registrar, Advocate Soumyajit Pani (SCBA representative), Advocate Anindita Pujari (representing the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association), Madhu Chauhan (representing the Supreme Court Bar Clerks’ Association), Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta (senior SCBA member), and Leni
Chaudhuri, Executive Director of the University of Chicago Centre in India Pvt Ltd.
The GSICC, responsible for addressing gender sensitisation and sexual harassment complaints within the Supreme Court, plays a crucial role in ensuring a gender-sensitive environment in the judiciary.
