On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India welcomed two new judges, Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan, as they took their oaths of office. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath to the newly appointed justices at a ceremony held at 10:30 AM.
With the swearing-in of Justices Singh and Mahadevan, the Supreme Court has regained its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice.
The appointments of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan were notified by the Centre on Tuesday, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation for their elevation five days prior.
The induction of these two judges not only restores the Supreme Court to its full strength but also brings diverse regional representation to the highest court of the country. Justice Singh’s appointment is particularly notable as it marks a significant milestone for Manipur in the Indian judiciary.
This move is expected to enhance the efficiency of the Supreme Court in handling its caseload and delivering timely justice.
