Following an incident where an inmate at Karnal jail attempted to take his own life using a sharp object, the police have registered a case against him for attempted suicide. The accused, a resident of Panipat and originally from Bihar, was under trial for a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Karnal since August 2023 and had been in jail since September.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Nayab Singh, the inmate had been presented before a court on Wednesday before the incident occurred. Upon returning from court, he attempted to end his own life but was unsuccessful. Currently, he is receiving treatment at a government hospital for his injuries.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by inmates, particularly those awaiting trial, and underscores the need for mental health support within the prison system. Authorities are likely to conduct an investigation into the circumstances leading to the attempted suicide and assess the inmate’s well-being while in custody.
