In a significant development in the Karnataka sex scandal case, the Special Court for People’s Representatives on Friday ordered the remand of suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna to police custody until June 6th. This decision comes as part of the ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual assault and the distribution of obscene videos.
Revanna, who is the grandson of JD(S) chief and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, appeared before Justice KN Shivakumar following his arrest by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The court has permitted Revanna’s advocate to meet with him daily between 09:30 am and 10:30 am during his custody.
The Hassan MP was apprehended by immigration officials and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Bengaluru International Airport upon his return from Germany. This arrest follows his departure from the country on April 27, just a day after the conclusion of polling for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Hassan. The SIT confiscated two of Revanna’s check-in bags for further investigation.
Revanna is accused of being involved in the sexual assault of multiple women, with explicit videos surfacing in the Hassan constituency ahead of the elections. The SIT, established by the state government to investigate these allegations, sought a 15-day custody to further probe the charges. The FIR, based on complaints from Revanna’s former house help, was registered in Holenarasipura.
In a notable move, the Karnataka Police appointed an all-female officer team, including a Superintendent of Police, to escort Revanna during public transits. This team escorted him at the airport, utilizing older Bolero vehicles instead of more upscale models for transport.
The scandal has caused significant upheaval within the Gowda family and the JD(S) party. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda has publicly stated that if his grandson is found guilty, he should be punished accordingly. Gowda also criticized Revanna for not addressing the allegations legally and warned that continued evasion could lead to familial isolation.
On May 29, the SIT arrested two prime accused, Naveen Gowda and Chetan, in connection with the case. They were apprehended while seeking anticipatory bail from the High Court. These individuals are alleged to have distributed pen drives containing the explicit videos.
The remand of Prajwal Revanna to police custody marks a critical juncture in the investigation of the Karnataka sex scandal. As the SIT continues its probe, the legal and political ramifications of the case remain to be seen.
