Kerala Court Orders CBI to Reopen Investigation into Jesna Missing Case

In a significant development, a court in Thiruvananthapuram directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to reinvestigate the mysterious disappearance of Kerala woman Jesna Maria James. The decision came on Friday, May 10, following a petition filed by Jesna’s father, who sought a fresh investigation into the case.

Jesna, a 20-year-old college student at the time, vanished without a trace in 2018 after boarding a bus from Erumeli town in Pathanamthitta district to visit her aunt’s house. Despite extensive efforts by the Kerala police department, the state Crime Branch, and subsequently the CBI, the case remained unsolved, prompting Jesna’s father to approach the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Thiruvananthapuram.

The court’s decision to order a reinvestigation was based on new evidence submitted by Jesna’s father, reportedly contained in a sealed cover. This evidence prompted the court to overturn the CBI’s closure report, issued in January 2024, citing a dead end in the investigation.

Since her disappearance on March 22, 2018, Jesna’s case has undergone multiple phases of investigation, starting with local police, then district authorities, followed by the Crime Branch, and finally the CBI, which conducted a comprehensive probe across multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.

Despite examining over 100 witnesses and exploring various locations associated with Jesna, the CBI’s efforts failed to yield conclusive results, leading to the closure report earlier this year. However, with the court’s directive for a fresh investigation, hopes are renewed for uncovering the truth behind Jesna’s disappearance.

The case has garnered significant attention and raised questions about the effectiveness of investigative mechanisms in addressing missing person cases. Jesna’s family and supporters continue to seek answers, hoping that the renewed focus on the investigation will bring closure and justice to Jesna and her loved ones.
