As the political landscape heats up in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, several high-profile politicians found themselves embroiled in legal battles before courts across the country on March 22. From Arvind Kejriwal to Tejasvi Surya, here’s a snapshot of the legal proceedings involving prominent figures:
Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) – Rouse Avenue Court – No Relief
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal faced a setback as the Rouse Avenue Court remanded him to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till March 28 in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case. Despite Kejriwal’s arrest and subsequent plea for interim protection being rejected by the Delhi High Court, he moved the Supreme Court challenging his arrest.
Indian National Congress – Delhi High Court – No Relief
The Delhi High Court rejected three petitions filed by the Indian National Congress (INC) challenging reassessment proceedings initiated against the party by the Income Tax (IT) Department for the years 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17. The party alleged that these proceedings have left its accounts frozen, impacting its ability to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
K Ponmudi (DMK) – Supreme Court – Relief Granted
The Supreme Court was informed that Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has invited Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader K Ponmudi to be sworn in as a minister after the top court stayed his conviction in a criminal case. This move came following strong reprimand from the Supreme Court to the Governor for refusing to re-induct Ponmudi despite the stay on his conviction.
Shobha Karandlaje (BJP) – Karnataka High Court – Relief Granted
The Karnataka High Court granted relief to Union Minister and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje by staying the FIR against her for her statement linking a suspect in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case with Tamil Nadu. The court questioned the invocation of offences and remarked against the FIR registered by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Tejasvi Surya (BJP) – Karnataka High Court – Relief Granted
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya secured relief from the Karnataka High Court as it stayed the FIR against him for allegedly posting objectionable tweets and violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The FIR was registered based on a complaint by the ECI and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) over Surya’s social media posts targeting a minority community.
As the legal battles continue, these cases underscore the intersection of law and politics in the lead-up to the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
