On Tuesday, an MP-MLA Court in Sultanpur upheld a 45-day jail sentence for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Anoop Sanda in connection with a 23-year-old case involving a road blockade protest. The case, which dates back to June 19, 2001, has seen a prolonged legal battle, culminating in this latest ruling.
The incident occurred when Singh, Sanda, and their supporters staged a protest near a flyover in Sultanpur, blocking the road to draw attention to ongoing power issues. At the time, Anoop Sanda was a leader of the Democratic Socialist Party, while Sanjay Singh was actively involved in local social work and political activism.
On January 11, 2023, Special Court Magistrate Yogesh Yadav convicted all six accused, including Singh and Sanda, sentencing them to 45 days in jail and imposing a fine of ₹1,500 each. The ruling was appealed by Singh and Sanda, but on Tuesday, Special Sessions Judge (MP/MLA) Ekta Verma dismissed their appeal, upholding the original conviction and sentence.
Special Public Prosecutor Vaibhav Pandey confirmed the court’s decision, stating that the ruling reinforced the legal accountability of public figures, regardless of the time elapsed since the offense.
Sanjay Singh, one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party, has deep roots in Sultanpur district. Before his involvement with AAP, Singh was associated with the Democratic Socialist Party, where he collaborated with socialist leader Raghu Thakur. His early activism included establishing the ‘Sultanpur Samaj Sewa Sangathan’ in 1994, focusing on advocating for hawkers’ rights and other social causes.
The defense team for Singh and Sanda was represented by lawyers Kamlesh Kumar Singh, Karuna Shankar Dwivedi, Arvind Singh, Rudra Pratap Singh, and Vibhash Srivastava.
