Mumbai Airport Expansion: High Court Allows Demolition of Unoccupied Buildings

The Bombay High Court rejected a plea by the Air India Staff Colony Association to pause the demolition of vacant buildings for the Mumbai Airport expansion.

  • The association argued that the demolitions were illegal as they resided in the colony.
  • The court ruled that the residents only held a license to occupy the apartments and did not own the land.
  • Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) assured the court that occupied buildings and schools would not be affected during this phase.
  • MIAL has permission from the land owner (AI Assets Holding Ltd) to demolish the 20 vacant buildings.
  • The remaining occupied buildings will go through the legal process of eviction under the AAI Act.

Key Points:

  • The court’s decision paves the way for MIAL to proceed with the demolition of the 20 uninhabited structures.
  • The residents of the occupied buildings still have legal recourse through the eviction process.
  • The expansion plan aims to redevelop the airport land.

Please note: This summary does not include the information about the ownership of the land or the transfer between different entities.
