Nalanda University: A Glorious History of Education, Destruction, and Rediscovery

Greetings, dear ones of India. I am Nalanda University, a beacon of ancient knowledge and wisdom. Today, I am here to share with you my story, a tale of glory, devastation, and resilience. Though the flames of destruction consumed me centuries ago, my legacy endures. Let me take you on a journey through my rich history, the tragedy that befell me, and the remarkable rediscovery of my ruins.

The Tyrant Who Set Me Ablaze: Bakhtiar Khilji

It was the year 1193 when Bakhtiar Khilji, a Turkish ruler, unleashed his fury upon me. Known for his ruthlessness and destructive zeal, Khilji led an army that ravaged Northern India. His disdain for knowledge and enlightenment culminated in an attack on my grounds. Thousands of scholars, monks, and students were massacred. My vast library, which housed countless manuscripts and books, was set on fire. The flames consumed the accumulated knowledge of centuries, burning for months and leaving nothing but ashes. My walls crumbled, and my voice was silenced.

Rediscovery and Revival

Centuries passed, and I lay in ruins, buried under layers of time. It wasn’t until the 19th century that my story began to resurface. British archaeologists, intrigued by historical accounts of a great university, embarked on excavations. Sir Alexander Cunningham, a pioneer in Indian archaeology, played a crucial role in my rediscovery. Subsequent excavations revealed the remnants of my grandeur—temples, stupas, classrooms, and residential quarters, all testament to a once-thriving center of learning.

My Architectural Marvels

My structure was a masterpiece of ancient architecture. Spanning several acres, my campus was a well-planned complex with red-brick buildings, stupas, shrines, and lush gardens. I had ten temples, many meditation halls, and classrooms that accommodated thousands of students. My library, the Dharmaganja, was divided into three buildings—Ratnasagara, Ratnadadhi, and Ratnaranjaka. It housed millions of manuscripts and texts, covering a wide array of subjects from Buddhism and philosophy to mathematics and astronomy.

Distinctive Features

  1. Academic Excellence: I was renowned for my rigorous curriculum and eminent faculty. Scholars from all over Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia, came to study and teach here.
  2. Diverse Disciplines: My courses included Vedic texts, Buddhist scriptures, logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture.
  3. International Student Body: I welcomed students from across the globe, making me an early example of international education.
  4. Residential Facilities: My dormitories housed over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers, providing a vibrant academic community.

The Reasons for My Destruction

The destruction of Nalanda was driven by multiple factors:

  • Religious Intolerance: Khilji’s invasion was fueled by a desire to spread Islam and eradicate other religious practices, especially Buddhism, which I represented.
  • Political Ambition: Khilji sought to consolidate his power by destroying centers of influence and knowledge, thereby crippling the intellectual foundation of the region.
  • Economic Looting: The wealth of my temples and the resources accumulated over centuries made me a lucrative target for invaders.

A Tale to Remember

Dear ones, my story is a reminder of the fragility of human achievements in the face of hatred and violence. As you listen to my tale, your eyes may well up with tears, and your heart may feel the weight of the loss. Yet, it is also a story of hope and resilience. My ruins stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of knowledge and the quest for truth.
