Narayana Murthy: Prioritize Job Creation, Especially Low-Tech Opportunities

Infosys Founder Narayana Murthy has called for a targeted focus on job creation, emphasizing the need for low-tech employment opportunities to address rising unemployment and growing income disparity in India. Speaking on the importance of inclusive economic growth, Murthy highlighted the critical role of export-driven strategies, akin to those adopted by China and Vietnam, in generating large-scale employment.

The Need for Low-Tech Jobs

Murthy underscored the widening gap in employment opportunities, particularly in labor-intensive sectors that can absorb the country’s vast unskilled and semi-skilled workforce. While India has made significant strides in technology and service-based industries, Murthy stressed that low-tech jobs—such as in manufacturing and assembly—are essential for socio-economic equity.

Export-Oriented Growth: Lessons from China and Vietnam

Citing the success of China and Vietnam, Murthy advocated adopting an export-oriented approach to create job opportunities across sectors. Both countries have capitalized on global demand by building robust manufacturing ecosystems, attracting foreign investment, and creating millions of low-tech jobs.

“India must position itself as a hub for global manufacturing, leveraging its workforce and improving infrastructure to compete on the world stage,” Murthy suggested. He emphasized that this strategy not only boosts employment but also strengthens the nation’s economic resilience.

India’s Path Forward

To replicate the success of China and Vietnam, Murthy recommended:

  1. Policy Incentives: Simplified regulations and incentives to attract foreign investment in manufacturing.
  2. Skill Development: Training programs for unskilled workers to improve productivity.
  3. Infrastructure Development: Strengthening ports, logistics, and transportation for seamless global trade.
  4. Export Promotion: Creating free trade agreements and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

The Bigger Picture

Murthy’s remarks come at a time when India is grappling with high unemployment rates and uneven growth. By focusing on low-tech job creation and embracing an export-driven economic model, the country could achieve more inclusive development while competing globally.

This vision aligns with India’s aspirations to emerge as a global economic powerhouse while addressing the immediate need for employment opportunities across all skill levels.
