On Wednesday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) sought responses from the Centre, Uttar Pradesh’s Forest and Environment Department, and other concerned authorities regarding a plea accusing Jaypee Infratech Limited of environmental violations in its Noida township project. The case was brought forward by residents of Jaypee Wishtown in Gautam Buddh Nagar, alleging significant alterations in the township that violate environmental norms.
An NGT bench led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, along with Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, expressed concern over the project’s proximity to the Yamuna riverbed, being only 2 km from the river and near the Okhla Bird Sanctuary. The residents’ plea also raised concerns about illegal tree felling and unauthorized commercial construction in designated green areas.
Acknowledging the gravity of the environmental compliance issues, the NGT issued notices to the Centre, the Noida Development Authority, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, the State Forest and Environment Department, and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Noida Sector 126. These respondents have been directed to file their responses via affidavits at least a week before the next scheduled hearing on November 23, 2024.
The case highlights the ongoing conflict between large-scale real estate developments and environmental preservation, particularly in sensitive areas like riverbeds and wildlife sanctuaries.
