The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing incident where a farmer was reportedly prevented from boarding a metro train at Rajajinagar station in Bengaluru, Karnataka, due to his untidy attire. The incident, captured in a viral video on social media, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the violation of human rights.
The NHRC, upon reviewing the media report, has deemed the incident, if true, as a blatant violation of human rights. Denying someone access to public transportation based on their clothing is unjustifiable and goes against fundamental principles of equality and dignity.
In response to this egregious incident, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Karnataka and the Managing Director of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). They have been directed to provide a detailed report within four weeks, outlining the circumstances of the incident and the measures taken or proposed to prevent such occurrences in the future.
According to the media report dated February 27, 2024, the farmer, carrying a sack of goods, was stopped by an official at the metro station’s bag checking point. A fellow passenger objected to this action, questioning the necessity of a dress code for metro passengers and highlighting the egalitarian nature of public transportation. The incident, captured on video and shared widely on social media, has sparked public outcry and calls for accountability.
The NHRC’s intervention underscores the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring equal access to public services for all citizens. Discriminatory practices, such as denying individuals access to transportation based on their appearance, have no place in a democratic society and must be swiftly addressed to uphold the principles of justice and dignity for all.
