The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated action following a media report highlighting the absence of adequate toilet facilities for girl students at Devarakonda Zila Parishad High School in Nalgonda district, Telangana. According to the report, girl students faced challenges as they resorted to using urinals at Sulabh complexes, only to be deterred by monetary demands. Subsequently, when they attempted to utilize free toilets at Devarakonda Bus Stop, they were denied access.
The NHRC has deemed the reported situation as a severe violation of the human rights of the girl students. Access to proper toilet facilities, especially for female students, is essential and falls under the basic amenities expected from educational institutions. The forced utilization of public toilets outside school premises raises concerns regarding the safety and security of female students.
Consequently, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of the Telangana Government, requesting a comprehensive report within four weeks. The report is expected to outline the measures taken or proposed to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, ensuring the welfare and dignity of students, particularly girls, in educational settings.
