A special court in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, has issued a permanent arrest warrant against former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav (75) in connection with a case related to the alleged illegal purchase of arms and ammunition between 1995 and 1997.
Mahendra Saini, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) of the special court designated to try MPs and MLAs, issued the permanent warrant against Lalu Yadav, according to special public prosecutor Abhishek Mehrotra.
The case, dating back to 1995-97, pertains to the procurement of arms from an authorized dealer in Gwalior using forged documents. It involves a total of 23 accused, all of whom have been charged in connection with the case. Lalu Yadav has been declared an absconder as he failed to appear in court.
The issuance of the permanent arrest warrant comes after no representative appeared on behalf of the RJD leader during the court proceedings. According to legal experts, a permanent arrest warrant is typically issued when the accused fails to appear in court despite the issuance of bailable, arrest, or non-bailable warrants.
Rakesh Pandey, a High Court lawyer based in Jabalpur, explained that while bailable and arrest warrants allow the accused time to appear before the court after receiving orders, a permanent arrest warrant is issued when the accused repeatedly fails to comply with court orders.
The issuance of the permanent arrest warrant underscores the seriousness of the allegations against Lalu Yadav in the arms procurement case and highlights the legal proceedings aimed at ensuring accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
