President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, thereby making it a law. Uttarakhand thus becomes the first state in the country post-Independence to adopt the UCC.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his delight and pride over this development, highlighting its significance in providing equal rights to all citizens and curbing the oppression of women. He emphasized that the implementation of the UCC law in Uttarakhand aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reflects the state government’s commitment to protecting the interests of its citizens.
Mr. Dhami stressed the role of the Uniform Civil Code in promoting social harmony and equality, underscoring its importance in upholding the fundamental principles of justice and fairness. He affirmed the state government’s determination to maintain the essential character of Uttarakhand while ensuring the welfare and rights of its people.
Mahendra Bhatt, the State BJP president, also expressed satisfaction with the President’s approval of the UCC, noting that it would pave the way for equal rights for all citizens. The approval of the UCC in Uttarakhand marks a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history and reflects its commitment to progressive and inclusive governance.
