Police to Move Higher Court for Permission to Try 17-Year-Old Boy Involved in Accident as Adult
Pune Police announced on Monday their intention to seek a higher court’s permission to try a 17-year-old boy as an adult for his involvement in a fatal car accident in the Kalyani Nagar area. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
The accident involved a speeding luxury car allegedly driven by the teenager, who is the son of a real estate developer. The car struck a motorcycle carrying Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both of whom succumbed to their injuries. The police claim the teenager was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
A case has been registered against him under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The Juvenile Justice Board granted him bail the same day, a decision that has been met with public criticism. The Board also mandated the youth to write a 300-word essay on road accidents, study traffic rules, assist Regional Transport Office officers for 15 days, and attend an alcohol de-addiction center for counseling.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar expressed dissatisfaction with the Board’s decision to grant bail and not permit the juvenile to be tried as an adult. “On Sunday itself, we moved an application before the court seeking permission to try the juvenile as an adult and send him to an observation home, but the plea was rejected. We are now approaching the sessions court with the same plea,” Kumar stated.
Although the blood report confirming the boy’s intoxication is still pending, preliminary investigations and CCTV footage from the bar reportedly show the juvenile consuming alcohol. “We will be submitting all these facts to the court,” Kumar added.
In addition to the charges against the teenager, his father is being charged under the Juvenile Justice Act, and the bar proprietors are facing charges for serving alcohol to an underage individual. The investigation of these cases has been transferred to the crime branch for a thorough probe.
Commissioner Kumar emphasized the police’s commitment to a thorough investigation, stating, “The case was transferred to an ACP-level officer and it is our endeavor to make a watertight case. We will appoint a special counsel in this case.”
