The Punjab & Haryana High Court has intervened in a case involving allegations of extortion and destruction of evidence against Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramandeep Singh, seeking responses from the Punjab Police and senior officials. The court has stayed proceedings against the DSP and requested an affidavit from the Fatehgarh Sahib Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) regarding findings recorded by the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC).
The case stems from a complaint filed on May 12, 2023, alleging criminal trespass, extortion, demand and acceptance of bribes, and destruction of evidence against Singh and other police officers. The PSHRC, in its order dated March 18, 2024, recommended the registration of a criminal case against Singh and other officers, expressing dismay over the deletion of CCTV footage that could have provided crucial evidence.
Singh, who was undergoing training at the time of the alleged incident, argued that he was not personally present during the events outlined in the complaint. Despite this, the commission recommended the registration of a criminal case against him based on the failure of the senior superintendent of police to produce the CCTV footage.
The court’s intervention comes after Singh challenged the commission’s order, contending that he was not directly involved in the incident. While the commission acknowledged Singh’s absence at the scene, it implicated him as a conspirator in the abduction.
In response to Singh’s plea, the court has stayed the proceedings against him and requested a response from the Punjab Police by July 16. Additionally, the SSP has been instructed to submit an affidavit detailing the findings recorded by the commission.
The outcome of this legal battle will have significant implications for both DSP Ramandeep Singh and the Punjab Police, as it navigates allegations of misconduct and the preservation of crucial evidence in the pursuit of justice.
