In response to a plea filed by Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky citing threats to his life, the Punjab & Haryana High Court has directed the Chandigarh Police to provide him with an armed personal security officer (PSO). The order, issued by Justice Vikas Bahl, comes amidst Lucky’s claims of receiving threats, including from a Pakistan-based number.
Lucky, in his plea submitted to the court, highlighted that he had approached the police on March 26, requesting security and an investigation into the threats he had received. However, he stated that no action had been taken by the police thus far. Given the ongoing election season and Lucky’s need to travel and participate in political activities, he requested the court to provide at least one armed PSO as an interim measure for his safety.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the high court directed the Chandigarh Police to provide Lucky with an armed guard, emphasizing the importance of ensuring his safety during this critical time. The court also scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 1, while seeking a response from the Chandigarh Police regarding the security arrangements for Lucky.
This decision by the high court underscores the significance of protecting individuals, especially those involved in political activities, from potential threats to their safety and well-being. It reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that individuals are able to exercise their rights without fear of intimidation or harm.
As the case progresses, it is imperative for the authorities to take swift and effective measures to address the security concerns raised by Lucky and to ensure that adequate protection is provided to him in accordance with the law. This will not only safeguard Lucky’s rights but also uphold the principles of democracy and freedom of expression in the region.
