In a significant development, the Special Judge, Anti Corruption (CBI Cases) Jammu has convicted Shri Tilak Raj, the former Head Goods Clerk at the Goods Office of Northern Railway, Railway Station, Jammu, in a bribery case. The conviction comes after a thorough investigation and trial conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The case dates back to July 8, 2013, when the CBI registered a complaint against Shri Tarsem Lal, then Chief Goods Supervisor, Shri Tilak Raj, and Shri Kameshwar Singh, both serving as Head Goods Clerks at the Goods Office of Northern Railway, Railway Station, Jammu. The complaint alleged that the accused were demanding a bribe of Rs. 22,000 from the complainant to reduce penalty charges imposed due to a delay in lifting consignments from the Railway Station.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on the same day, during which Shri Tilak Raj was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from the complainant. The trap also led to the arrest of the other two accused.
Following a comprehensive investigation and the submission of chargesheets against all accused parties on January 2, 2014, the trial commenced before the Court of Ld. Special Judge, Anti Corruption (CBI Cases) Jammu. Charges were framed on April 30, 2014, against the accused.
Despite the unfortunate demise of two accused individuals, Tarsem Lal and Kameshwar Singh, during the course of the trial, the legal proceedings against Shri Tilak Raj continued. After due process, the Court found him guilty of the charges.
The conviction of Shri Tilak Raj underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law. The successful prosecution, supported by 21 witnesses and 31 documents/evidences, highlights the diligent efforts of the CBI in bringing perpetrators of corruption to justice.
The quantum of punishment for Shri Tilak Raj will be pronounced by the Court tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in the fight against bribery and corruption within the railway sector.
