The Rajasthan High Court has rejected the application of self-styled godman Asaram seeking permission to undergo medical treatment at a facility in Pune. The decision came after concerns were raised by Pune police regarding potential threats to law and order during his stay at the hospital.
Asaram, who has been incarcerated since August 2013 after being convicted in a rape case, had petitioned the court to allow him to receive treatment under the Ayurveda system at the Madhavbaug Multidisciplinary Cardiac Care Clinic & Hospital in Pune. However, the court, presided over by justices V K Mathur and Dinesh Mehta, dismissed his request, directing him instead to seek treatment at the Ayurveda University Hospital in Jodhpur.
In its ruling, the court also instructed the Additional Advocate General (AAG) to provide a report on the availability of necessary treatment facilities at the Ayurveda University Hospital in Jodhpur by the next hearing scheduled for March 22.
During the previous hearing on March 15, the court had sought clarification on the treatment procedure and duration, as well as reports from the Jodhpur Police Commissioner and the Mumbai Police Commissioner regarding the need for a police escort and potential law and order challenges during Asaram’s transit and stay in Pune.
Asaram’s legal team had argued for a 14-day parole, citing the requirement for treatment at the Madhavbaug Hospital. However, the Additional Advocate General countered this plea, highlighting the presence of reputed medical institutions like AIIMS and the Ayurveda University in Jodhpur capable of providing high-quality medical care.
With the rejection of Asaram’s application, the Rajasthan High Court has reinforced its commitment to upholding law and order while ensuring access to appropriate medical treatment within the existing facilities available to the incarcerated godman.
