In a controversial move, the Russian Federal Service for Monitoring (Rosfinmonitoring) has categorized the “LGBT public movement” as a terrorist organization, adding it to its official list of extremist groups. This development follows a Supreme Court ruling three months prior, declaring the LGBT+ movement as extremist, thereby prohibiting all related activities and the display of rainbow pride symbols.
The decision by Rosfinmonitoring, responsible for combatting money laundering and terrorist financing, has sparked international outcry, with critics condemning it as a severe violation of human rights and an escalation of persecution against the LGBT+ community in Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Justice’s lawsuit alleging the incitement of social and religious discord by the LGBT+ movement paved the way for the Supreme Court’s ruling. Since then, individuals associated with the movement have faced prosecution and detention for expressing their identity or support for LGBT+ rights.
This latest development underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBT+ community in Russia, including legislative measures limiting marriage to heterosexual couples and the banning of gender affirming care for transgender individuals.
